LAKE

River eyes me suspiciously as soon as I get into the car, a strange expression on his face.

“What?” I ask.

River snorts. “What? Seriously, Lake? You’re in there forever and come out looking like you had a quickie in Mr. Cirillo’s living room.” River’s mouth drops open and he covers it dramatically. “Oh my gods, did you have a quickie in his living room?”

I can only assume he means sex. “If you’re referring to sex, then no, we did not do that.” I tilt my head toward him. “Is it even possible to have penatrative sex in that short amount of time?”

River starts the car with a shake of his head. “I didn’t necessarily mean penatrative sex, as you put it, but yeah, you’d be surprised how quick some guys get off. I wouldn’t expect it from those two, they look like they know what they’re doing, but you never know.”

I stay silent, trying to process his words. They both made some comments that make me think they may have been considering some type of sexual relationship with me, and I’m unsure how I feel about it. It’s never been something I’ve considered too much one way or the other. But for some reason, I can imagine eventually being comfortable enough with the two of them to get there. That’s a thought for another day.

“They asked me out on a date,” I blurt out after minutes of silence.

River glances my way, that strange smile back. “Oh yeah? Both of them?”

“Yes, is that strange?”

River shrugs. “It’s not the societal norm, but I don’t think it’s strange. I never really understood why anyone else cared about a complete stranger’s personal life. Cooper and I aren’t hurting anyone fucking each other and making babies, and you wouldn’t be hurting anyone if you date two men. There will be people who respond negatively to it, just so you’re aware. But if it doesn’t bother you, and you don’t feel forced, then there’s no issue with it.”

I think about what River says. I definitely want to pursue more with Evander and Logan, though I’m not exactly sure what that means yet. Does it bother me that there’s two of them? No, it feels right. And generally, I don’t let other people’s opinions of me affect my decisions, but there are a few people I do care about.

“Do you think Dad would be upset?”

River shakes his head. “Nah. He might be a little surprised, especially since you never showed any interest in anyone before now, at least that we know of, but he won’t be upset. He’ll like them. I’d just make sure you tell him you’re interested in them before he meets everyone for Sunday dinner. You don’t want him to be blindsided.”

That makes sense. “But he won’t be disappointed?”

River scowls. “Fuck, no. Lake, Dad is so proud of you, and nothing short of murdering someone would change that. Even then, it would probably depend on the circumstances. He’d never, ever be disappointed in you for liking two men.
